Terms of service

Last updated 14 September 2026

Who we are

CamyCal is operated by Campbell Ehsman, trading as CamyCal, based in Queensland, Australia. You can reach us at [email protected]. By creating an account or using the service you agree to these terms.

What the service is

CamyCal is a shared calendar for small groups. Events, notes and calendar details are encrypted on your device before they are sent to us, and the keys are derived from your passphrase on your device. We store and move ciphertext we cannot read.

That is a description of the product, not a promise about your device. If your device or your browser is compromised, the encryption does not protect you from that.

Your account, your passphrase, and recovery

  • You are responsible for keeping your passphrase and your recovery code safe, and for what happens under your account.
  • We cannot reset your passphrase. We never receive it, and the encryption keys are derived from it. If you lose your passphrase and your recovery code together, your data is permanently unreadable — by you and by us. Nobody can restore it. This is not a defect; it is what makes the rest of the service true.
  • You must be at least 16 years old to use the service, and you must give us an email address you actually control.

Price and payment

CamyCal is free while it is in early access. Prices are published on the front page, but no payment is taken and no card details are collected today. We will tell account holders by email before charging begins.

When paid plans are offered:

  • The price you are shown before you pay is the total you are charged, in the currency shown. There are no added fees at checkout and no separate tax line unless the price says it includes one.
  • The monthly plan is charged monthly. The annual plan is charged once for twelve months and renews annually.
  • Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. You can cancel at any time and you keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for.
  • We may change prices, and we will give you notice before a change takes effect on your subscription.

Our refund policy is at Refunds. It is more generous than the law requires, and it does not replace your statutory rights.

Acceptable use

Do not use CamyCal to:

  • break the law, or to store or share material that is unlawful;
  • harass, threaten, or track another person, or to add somebody to a calendar in order to monitor them;
  • attack the service or anyone else's use of it — probing, rate-limit evasion, scraping, or attempting to reach an account or calendar that is not yours;
  • resell the service, or present it as your own.

We may suspend or close an account that does any of this. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will tell you why.

Your content

Your events, notes and calendar details remain yours. Because they are encrypted before they reach us, we hold them as data we cannot read.

You give us the permission we need to run the service: to store your ciphertext, to send it to the devices and calendar apps you have connected, and to keep backups. That permission is limited to operating CamyCal, and it ends when you delete the content or close your account. We do not use your content for advertising, we do not sell it, and we do not train anything on it — we could not, since we cannot read it.

If you share a calendar with other people, what you put in it is visible to them. That is what a shared calendar is. Removing somebody from a calendar stops them reading it from that point on; it cannot reach a copy they already downloaded, and the app tells you so on the screen where you remove them.

Availability and changes to the service

We work to keep CamyCal running, but we do not promise uninterrupted service, and the service is provided as it is. We may change features, and we may stop offering the service altogether. If we do stop, we will give reasonable notice to the email address on your account, so that you have time to export what you need.

Keep your own record of anything you cannot afford to lose. An encrypted calendar is not a backup.

Australian Consumer Law

Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies those guarantees, and nothing in these terms is intended to.

If the service fails to meet a consumer guarantee, you are entitled to a remedy — a repair or re-supply for a minor failure, or a refund and compensation for a major one. See Refunds.

Liability

Nothing in these terms limits our liability for anything it cannot lawfully limit, including:

  • fraud, or any other liability that the law does not allow us to exclude;
  • death or personal injury caused by our negligence;
  • the consumer guarantees described above.

Beyond that, and to the extent the law allows, our liability for a failure to comply with a consumer guarantee is limited to re-supplying the service, or paying the cost of having it re-supplied.

For everything else, we are not liable for loss that was not reasonably foreseeable when you agreed to these terms, or for loss of profit, revenue, or business opportunity. We are not liable for data you cannot recover because you lost your passphrase and recovery code, which is the one risk the product's design puts in your hands and says so plainly at signup.

Ending your account

You can stop using CamyCal at any time, and you can ask us to close your account by emailing [email protected] from the address on the account. There is no self-service delete button yet; the privacy policy explains what happens to your data when you ask, and what we cannot do about copies you have already downloaded.

We may close an account that breaches these terms, or that we are required to close by law.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The date at the top of this page changes when we do, and if a change is significant we will tell account holders by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use the service after that means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law and complaints

These terms are governed by the laws of Queensland, Australia, and you and we both submit to the jurisdiction of its courts. If you are a consumer, this does not take away the protection of the mandatory consumer law where you live.

If something has gone wrong, tell us first at [email protected] — most things are fixed faster that way. Australian consumers can also contact the ACCC or their state consumer affairs body, and consumers in the EU or UK can contact the consumer authority in their own country.
